Level 1 vs Level 2 home charging
Level 1 uses a standard 120 volt outlet and adds only a few miles of range per hour, which is fine for light daily driving. Level 2 uses a 240 volt circuit like an electric dryer and adds roughly five to ten times more range per hour, which is why most owners choose it.

What the installation involves
A dedicated circuit runs from your panel to the charger location, with a breaker and wire sized for the charger. Electrical code treats EV charging as a continuous load, so the circuit is sized at 125% of the charger's rated current. For example, a 40 amp charger commonly goes on a 50 amp circuit.
The electrician will also check whether your panel has spare capacity. If not, options include a panel upgrade, a load management device, or a subpanel.

Permits, inspection and rebates
Most jurisdictions require an electrical permit and inspection for a Level 2 charger. Utilities and the state sometimes offer rebates or special EV rate plans. Check with your electric utility and the California Energy Commission for current programs before you buy.

What to ask before you hire
Is the electrician licensed with the CSLB (look for the C-10 electrical classification)? Will they do a load calculation? Who pulls the permit? Do they test and label the circuit? Get the answers in writing.

Frequently asked questions
Can I plug my EV into a regular outlet?
Yes, with the Level 1 cord that comes with most EVs, but charging is slow. Never use an extension cord, and have the outlet checked if it feels warm.
Does an EV charger need its own circuit?
Yes. Level 2 chargers need a dedicated 240 volt circuit that is not shared with other loads.
Do I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger?
Not always. It depends on your panel's capacity and existing loads. An electrician can run a load calculation to tell you.
