Installing a Ceiling Fan or Light Fixture: DIY or Call a Pro?

Short answer: Swapping a light fixture is a realistic DIY job if you shut off the breaker, confirm power is off with a tester and the wiring is in good condition. A ceiling fan needs a fan-rated box. Call an electrician for old or damaged wiring, new circuits or no ceiling box.

Before you touch anything

Turn off the breaker, not just the wall switch, and confirm the power is off with a non-contact voltage tester. Support the fixture so it does not hang by its wires.

Ceiling fans need the right box

A ceiling fan moves and vibrates, so the electrical box must be rated for fan support and anchored to the framing. A plain fixture box is not enough. If you do not have a fan-rated box or access above the ceiling, an electrician can install the proper support.

Match the wires

Typically black connects to black (hot), white to white (neutral) and bare or green to the ground. Fans with lights may need an extra wire for separate control. Use proper wire connectors and tuck connections neatly into the box.

Call a licensed electrician if

The wiring is cloth-covered, brittle, aluminum or has no ground; the box is loose or damaged; you want a new switch location or new circuit; there is flickering, heat or a burning smell; or you are unsure what you are looking at.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace a light fixture myself?

Many people do, but only with the power off and verified. When in doubt, hire a licensed electrician.

Why does my new fan wobble?

Often a loose mounting or unbalanced blades, but it may also be a box that is not rated for fan support.

Do I need a permit to swap a fixture?

Replacing a fixture in kind usually does not. New circuits or wiring changes usually do. Check with your local building department.
